چکیده

The detection and characterization of self-organized criticality (SOC), in both real and simulated data, has undergone many significant revisions over the past 25 years. The explosive advances in the many numerical methods available for detecting, discriminating, and ultimately testing, SOC have played a critical role in developing our understanding of how systems experience and exhibit SOC. In this article, methods of detecting SOC are reviewed; from correlations to complexity to critical quantities. A description of the basic autocorrelation method leads into a detailed analysis of application-oriented methods developed in the last 25 years. In the second half of this manuscript space-based, time-based and spatial-temporal methods are reviewed and the prevalence of power laws in nature is described, with an emphasis on event detection and characterization. The search for numerical methods to clearly and unambiguously detect

Self-organized criticality: A signature of quantumlike chaos in atmospheric flows

Atmospheric flows exhibit long-range spatiotemporal correlations manifested as the fractal geometry to the global cloud cover pattern concomitant with inverse power law form for power spectra of temporal fluctuations on all spacetime scales ranging from turbulence (centimetres-seconds) to climate (kilometres-years). Long-range spatiotemporal correlations are ubiquitous to dynamical systems in n...

Life and times of an avalanche

The avalanche dynamics in the Bak–Sneppen mechanism of self-organized criticality (SOC) is discussed. Rigorous arguments reveal the emergent history dependence that dominates the intermittent activity. In numerical studies the emergent SOC state shows glassy features, such as aging and an ultrametric organization of activity. c © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Self-Organized Criticality in the Model of Biological Evolution Describing Interaction of"Coenophilous"and"Coenophobous"Species

The modification of the model of P.Bak and K.Sneppen of the self-organized biological evolution is proposed on the basis of a formalization of the scheme of the biosphere evolution suggested by O.V.Kovalev. This scheme is regarded as one approximating the realistic model of the ecosystem evolution. The fundamental difference between ”coenophilous” species and ”coenophobous” ones in respect to t...

Punctuated Equilibrium in Software Evolution

An approach based on the paradigm of self-organized criticality is proposed for experimental investigation and theoretical modeling of software evolution. The dynamics of modifications is studied for three free, open source programs MOZILLA, FREE-BSD, and EMACS using the data from version control systems. Scaling laws typical for self-organized criticality found. A model of software evolution p...

Self-organized Criticality and Phase Problem in Magnetoaocustic Emission Burst in Ferromagnets

Two types of ferromagnets, pure iron and steel with varying geometry and microstructural properties, were prepared for the present study of magnetoacoustic emission (MAE). The purpose was to separate the effects of structural property variations from changes caused by differences in the sample geometry. The position and shape of the leading MAE sub-burst and its variation among the samples are ...
